What Do We Mean by Reality?
A foundational map of reality distinguishes world, experience, model and description, and shows why empirical fact, philosophical interpretation and speculation are not the same level of claim.
We use the word reality as if it meant something completely obvious. Yet it can refer to at least four different things: the world that exists; what we experience of it; the model through which we explain it; and the description through which we communicate that model to others. Many disputes begin when these levels are quietly treated as the same thing.

This article turns those two axes into a basic map for everything that follows.
The safest starting point is not 'I already know what reality ultimately is', but 'I distinguish the world, experience, model, description and the evidential strength of each claim I make.'
The word 'reality' hides several different questions
When we ask 'What is real?', we may be asking very different questions. Metaphysics asks what exists and what kinds of things make up the world. Epistemology asks how we can know anything about that world. Science develops testable models of phenomena. Phenomenology studies how the world appears in experience. Social ontology examines things that exist because people collectively sustain practices, rules and meanings.
These levels are not competitors. Asking whether an electron exists is not the same as asking how red appears in experience; neither is the same as asking whether money exists as a social institution; and none of them is identical to the metaphysical claim that matter, consciousness or something else is the ultimate basis of everything.
This article therefore does not offer one final definition designed to close every debate. It offers an orientation map, so that later articles can be clear about which question they are actually investigating.
In everyday life and most scientific practice, we behave as though there is a world that does not depend on what we wish or believe about it. If we miscalculate the load-bearing capacity of a bridge, the bridge does not adapt to our optimism. If a clinician misreads a laboratory result, the consequences do not vanish because the mistake was sincere. The world can resist our representations of it.
Philosophically, this is close to realism: the idea that at least some things, properties and relations exist independently of our beliefs about them. But caution is already necessary here. Metaphysical realism is influential and intuitive to many philosophers; it is not simply an experimental result from which one complete metaphysics automatically follows.
A world independent of our opinions ≠ the claim that we already know that world completely as it is in itself.
Second level: experience is real as experience
Human beings never begin from a perfect view from nowhere. We encounter the world through a body, senses, nervous system, attention, memory, language and the history of our own lives. Every conscious experience therefore has a first-person dimension: pain hurts someone, colour appears to someone, a thought occurs to someone.
It is therefore a mistake to equate subjective with imaginary. Pain is subjective in the sense that it is experienced by a subject, yet it can be entirely real. Fear, love, taste, the felt passage of time or a mystical experience are real events in a person's life even when we do not yet know what caused them or how they should be interpreted ontologically.
The opposite mistake is equally serious: the fact that an experience is real as an experience does not make every explanation of it correct. A person may genuinely see a light and misidentify its source. They may sincerely experience a presence and be mistaken about what was present. The reality of an experience and the truth of its interpretation are different questions.
Perception Is Not the Same as Reality already showed that perception is not a perfect copy of the world. Philosophy of perception frames the same difficulty as the distinction between how things appear and how they are. An object can look smaller because it is distant, a straight stick in water can appear bent, and the same event can be remembered differently by two witnesses.
This does not make perception worthless. Without perception, most of our knowledge of the environment would be impossible. It means that perception is treated as access to the world that can be more or less reliable, not as an unquestionable photograph of reality.
Perception Is Not Reality: How the Brain Builds Our World will examine this problem in detail: how the brain builds a useful world-model from signals that are incomplete, selective and context-sensitive. This article only establishes the boundary: appearance is not identical to the thing, but appearance itself is part of the data that require explanation.
Third level: a model is a map, not the territory
No human mind can carry every detail of the world. We therefore build models. A city map omits the height of every tree. A weather model does not contain every molecule of air. An economic model selects some variables and temporarily neglects others. A model is useful partly because it is selective.
Philosophy of science stresses that scientific models are often idealised. They may contain simplifications or assumptions that are not literally true in every respect and still represent important relationships, generate successful predictions or reveal causal structure. A successful model is therefore not the same thing as a perfect copy of the world.
A good map is not one that contains everything. A good map contains the right things for the question we are trying to solve.
Once a model is put into words, another layer appears: language. Words classify, name and emphasise. The same physical event can be described as a temperature change, heat transfer, a weather phenomenon or uncomfortable heat. Descriptions can differ without there being several separate physical worlds.
This matters when people speak of 'my truth' and 'your truth'. Often they actually mean their memory, perspective, evaluation or emotional experience. In those cases it is more precise to say my experience, my perspective or my interpretation instead of using the word truth for all of them at once.
Language is not merely a harmless label, however. The categories through which we describe something can influence the questions we ask, the data we collect and the alternatives we notice. A serious investigator must therefore examine both the world and the vocabulary used to describe the world.
Objective, subjective and intersubjective do not mean true, false and compromise
An objective claim aims to be correct independently of the observer's personal preferences. A subjective claim describes or includes a subject's state, perspective or evaluation. Intersubjective means that multiple people can share, check or coordinate something under common procedures.
A temperature measured with a calibrated instrument is a different kind of datum from the sentence 'I feel hot'. But the second sentence is not therefore false. It can be a true description of bodily experience. The mistake is to infer an exact room temperature directly from that feeling, or to infer from the thermometer that everyone must experience the room in the same way.
Scientific objectivity is therefore not a magical absence of human beings. In practice it is strengthened through methods that reduce dependence on any one perspective: explicit definitions, measurement, calibration, documentation, comparison of independent results, public criticism and the possibility of repetition or checking.
Money, contracts, universities, citizenship, corporations and state borders are not natural objects of the same kind as rocks or stars. Their existence depends at least partly on rules, practices, recognition, documents and collective behaviour. Social ontology studies precisely these kinds of entities and structures.
The phrase socially constructed therefore does not automatically mean imaginary or arbitrary. A banknote is a physical object, while its monetary function is social. A border can be legally instituted and collectively maintained while having very concrete consequences for movement. An institution exists differently from a mountain, but it can still causally shape the lives of millions of people.
This distinction will matter repeatedly in THY-REALITY. To understand authority, money or identity, we need to know which properties are physical, biological, psychological and which depend on shared rules. Different modes of existence are not simply different degrees of imagination.
What science tells us about reality — and what it does not promise
Science is an extraordinarily successful way of publicly testing claims about the world. It observes, measures, experiments, compares models with data and searches for explanations that survive criticism. Through those practices we can learn about things that are not directly available to unaided senses, from microscopic structures to distant astronomical phenomena.
But philosophy of science shows that scientific success does not by itself force one simple metaphysical interpretation. A scientific realist will understand successful theories as at least approximately true descriptions of observable and unobservable aspects of the world. Other positions are more cautious and emphasise empirical success rather than full theoretical truth. That is a genuine philosophical dispute, not a laboratory measurement that has already been settled.
This article therefore needs only a more modest conclusion: science gives us increasingly disciplined and publicly testable maps of parts of reality, but a map need not be declared the final ontological word in order to be extremely useful.
Even the most precise measurement does not produce a view from nowhere without remainder. We measure a specified quantity, with a particular instrument, under a definition and a measurement model. Metrology therefore accompanies a measurement result with an assessment of measurement uncertainty. This is not an admission that measurement tells us nothing; it tells us how precisely we know what we claim to know.
That is a useful pattern for inquiry more generally. Mature knowledge is not necessarily knowledge without doubt. Often it is knowledge able to say what was measured, what was inferred, which model was used, which alternatives were tested and where the remaining uncertainty lies.
Uncertainty ≠ ignorance. Carefully described uncertainty is often evidence of better knowledge.
Empirical fact, philosophical interpretation and speculation
For the expanding THY-REALITY library we need a simple three-level discipline. An empirical claim is directly tied to observation, measurement, a document or another form of publicly checkable evidence. A philosophical interpretation asks what such evidence means for broader questions about knowledge or existence. Speculation goes beyond the evidence currently available and opens a possibility that has not yet been adequately tested.
All three can have a legitimate role. Problems begin when they are presented as equally certain. The fact that an experience is possible does not by itself prove a specific metaphysics. The fact that a model predicts successfully does not settle every philosophical question about what its mathematical entities 'really are'. And an interesting hypothesis does not become a fact merely because it elegantly connects several ideas.
Atlas resničnosti uses an even finer chain for experiential claims: experience → phenomenology → report → interpretation → metaphysical conclusion → public evidential force. This article extends the same logic to the whole library: always ask which step a claim has actually reached.
When we encounter a large claim about reality, instead of reflexively accepting or rejecting it we can use a short audit:
- What exactly is claimed to exist or to have happened?
- Are we talking about an external event, a subjective experience, a social institution or a metaphysical explanation?
- What was directly observed or measured, and what is already an inference?
- Which model or concepts were used in the description?
- Are there independent routes to the same result?
- What would we expect if the claim were false?
- How large is the measurement, data or interpretive uncertainty?
- Which competing explanation can account for the same evidence?
- Is the conclusion empirical, philosophical or speculative?
- What evidence would honestly make us change our mind?
These questions do not guarantee infallibility. They create something more useful: a structure in which reality is allowed to correct our story.
Where the map of reality leads next
If only one idea is retained from this article, let it be this: between the world and our claim about the world there are usually several steps. Something exists or happens; we perceive it; we choose a model; we describe the event; we compare the claim with other evidence; and only then do we form a broader conclusion. The stronger the conclusion, the more discipline is required between those steps.

THY-REALITY does not need one story that explains everything in advance. It needs a tree of questions, sufficiently good methods, and the willingness to correct the map when it fails to match the territory.
