Mind, Brain and Consciousness: Three Things We Often Confuse

A definitional map of three terms often used as synonyms: the brain as a biological organ, mind as the level of mental functions, and consciousness as subjective experience—without prematurely choosing a single theory of consciousness.

When we say brain, mind and consciousness, we often speak as if they were three names for the same thing. They are not. The brain is a biological organ. Mind is a broader term for mental processes and functions—perception, thought, memory, emotion, decision, intention. Consciousness refers to the fact that something is experienced: there is a subjective point of view, something it is like from the inside to see, hear, feel or think.

This distinction is not merely terminological. If we collapse the three, we quickly make bad inferences: we jump from a neural correlation to a complete theory of mind; turn the feeling of consciousness into proof of a metaphysics; or simply call every nonconscious process conscious. This article therefore establishes the definitional foundation for the next articles on attention, memory, and the science of consciousness.

This article working formula: brain = biological infrastructure; mind = the organised level of mental functions; consciousness = subjective experience or the presence of experiencing. These levels are tightly related, but the question of their ultimate ontological identity remains an open scientific and philosophical problem.

Three words, three different questions

The word brain primarily answers an anatomical and biological question: which organ, cells, circuits, chemical messengers and electrical patterns participate in behaviour and cognition? Mind answers a functional and psychological question: what does an organism perceive, remember, want, plan, feel and infer? Consciousness opens a third question: why and when are some of these processes accompanied by inner experience?

In everyday language the levels overlap. We say something is 'on my mind', that our 'brain is not working', or that someone 'regained consciousness'. That is normal. Trouble starts when a linguistic shortcut becomes a scientific or metaphysical equation.

This article therefore uses the terms operationally: precisely enough for research, but not as if the ultimate nature of mind or consciousness had already been settled.

The brain is part of the nervous system: a physical organ made of neural and supporting cells, blood vessels, chemical signalling and extraordinarily dense networks of connections. We can image it, record electrical activity, observe the effects of injury, drugs, stimulation, sleep and anaesthesia. In this sense, brain is the least ambiguous of the three terms.

The NIH BRAIN Initiative describes thought, emotion, perception, memory and decision-making as capacities whose biological basis is investigated through the activity of cells, circuits and larger systems. This provides a very strong empirical connection between brain function and mental life.

Yet even a perfect map of brain activity would still be a description of a physical system. By itself it would not tell us which philosophical account of the relationship between that system, mind and subjective experience is ultimately correct.

Mind: not an extra organ inside the skull

In psychology, mind functions as an umbrella term. The APA uses it for the organised totality of mental and psychological processes and for functions such as perception, attention, thinking, problem-solving, language, learning and memory. Mind therefore need not name a separate substance or hidden object inside the head.

When we talk about mind, we often talk at the level of functions and contents: I believe, want, doubt, calculate, imagine, plan and remember. This is a different level of description from 'the firing pattern changed in this neural population'. Both descriptions can be useful at the same time.

The same event can therefore be described neurologically, psychologically and behaviourally without those descriptions being straightforward substitutes for one another. Whether the mental description is ultimately fully reducible to the physical one is already a philosophical thesis, not a dictionary definition.

The most central use of consciousness concerns subjective experience: the fact that there is something it is like to see red, feel pain, hear a melody, dream or have a thought. Philosophy of consciousness often calls this phenomenal consciousness.

Consciousness is therefore not simply correct behavioural response or information processing. A system can process a stimulus without a person reporting conscious experience of that stimulus. This distinction makes experiments possible in which researchers try to separate neural processing from the neural correlates of conscious experience.

Consciousness is also epistemically unusual: we observe brain activity from the outside, while our own experience is also known from the inside. This does not prove two separate substances. It does help explain why the problem of consciousness is harder to translate directly into anatomy.

Wakefulness, responsiveness and consciousness are not identical

Clinical language often distinguishes wakefulness, responsiveness and signs of awareness. A person may appear awake—for example with open eyes and sleep–wake cycles—while showing very little or no behavioural evidence of awareness of the environment. After severe brain injury, diagnosis of consciousness is therefore not a simple binary judgement.

NINDS distinguishes coma, unresponsive wakefulness syndrome and the minimally conscious state. Modern neuroimaging and electrophysiology have also shown that some apparently unresponsive patients can retain patterns of brain activity not detected by bedside behaviour alone.

The lesson is methodological: absence of visible response is not automatically absence of all consciousness, while wakefulness alone does not prove rich conscious content.

Perception Is Not Reality: How the Brain Builds Our World already showed that perceptual systems filter and organise information before our stable experience of the world emerges. More broadly, many processes—bodily regulation, automated motor routines, much language processing, associations and preparation of responses—operate without step-by-step conscious access.

So brain activity = conscious content is false. Neural activity is indispensable to consciousness research, but vast amounts of brain activity never become the subject of current first-person report.

This also corrects the intuition that the conscious 'I' manually directs every detail of our behaviour. Much successful action depends on processes we do not monitor moment by moment.

Mind is broader than what we are conscious of right now

If mind is used as an umbrella for mental processes, it includes processes that are not currently in conscious focus. Memory can shape a choice even when we do not deliberately recollect the event. Emotional appraisal can alter behaviour before we can articulate a reason. A learned skill can run almost automatically.

This makes mind = consciousness an awkward equation. Consciousness is an important part of mental life, but contemporary psychology and neuroscience investigate cognitive, affective and motivational processes that are not necessarily objects of current introspection.

The distinction will matter later for self-deception, habits, trauma, implicit learning and algorithmic influence: something can affect our mind without being clearly noticed at the same moment.

Attention often increases the chance that something becomes clearly conscious. Focusing on one voice in a noisy room sharpens its content; without attention we can miss even striking changes. It is therefore understandable that the terms are confused.

Research nevertheless distinguishes attention as selection and prioritisation of information from consciousness as experience. Experimental work has found conditions in which effects of attention and reported awareness can at least partly dissociate, including at the level of neural correlates.

Sleep, anaesthesia and injury reveal strong dependence on brain state

Consciousness is not the same across all brain regimes. Wakefulness, different stages of sleep, general anaesthesia and brain injury involve changes in patterns of activity, connectivity and responsiveness. In some states reportable experience disappears; in others, such as dreams, conscious content can occur without ordinary perceptual contact with the environment.

Research on neural correlates of consciousness therefore seeks the minimal brain mechanisms associated with consciousness in general or with particular contents of experience. This is a major empirical programme and increasingly helps distinguish different states.

But neural correlate is deliberately cautious language. A correlate identifies physical processes systematically associated with consciousness or its content. The term alone does not settle why such a process is accompanied by experience, or whether experience is ontologically identical with it.

If injury to a brain system changes memory, we are justified in concluding that the system matters for normal memory function. If anaesthesia reliably changes particular patterns of neural activity and consciousness, we gain an even stronger causal relationship between brain state and conscious state.

But A affects B does not automatically entail A is B. Nor does correlation by itself provide a complete causal theory. Philosophy of mind therefore distinguishes the empirical question of how mental states depend on neural processes from the ontological question of what mental states ultimately are.

Mind–brain identity theory says that mental processes are, in the relevant sense, brain processes. Functionalism characterises mental states primarily by the roles they play within a system. These are distinct models, even where some versions can converge. Non-reductive physicalist, dualist and other positions also exist.

The mind–body problem is not solved by a single word

When someone says 'the mind is just the brain', they may be expressing a physicalist thesis. When someone says 'the mind uses the brain', they may be expressing a dualist or other non-reductive thesis. Both formulations are already philosophical models, not neutral definitions.

Contemporary philosophy of mind includes materialist/physicalist theories, identity theories, functionalism, dualisms, panpsychist approaches and others. Their disagreements concern reduction, causation, subjectivity, qualitative experience and what should count as a satisfying explanation.

This article does not choose a winner. Its task is more modest and more necessary: when we later compare theories, we must know whether we are talking about an organ, a mental function, or subjective experience.

Prebujenje v Naravni zakon raises the idea that the brain might not produce consciousness but somehow receive or filter it, rather like a radio receiver. As a philosophical or metaphysical possibility this is a legitimate question. As an empirical fact, however, it is not an established explanation in neuroscience.

The strong connection between brain state and consciousness is compatible with more than one metaphysical interpretation. A physicalist can see it as expected because consciousness is a brain process or a property of a physical system. A receiver-model advocate can argue that damage to a receiver changes output without showing that the receiver creates the signal.

But the standard established in How Do We Know What We Know? Evidence, Belief and Certainty and Where Does Fact End and Interpretation Begin? applies exactly here: an analogy is not evidence of a mechanism. A receiver hypothesis needs its own testable predictions and evidence that discriminates it from competitors. An unusual experience, intuition, or the fact that consciousness remains incompletely explained does not by itself confirm the model.

The conscious self is another question, not a definition of consciousness

Talk about consciousness quickly adds a self: 'I am the one who is conscious'. Yet personal identity, autobiographical memory, body representation, sense of agency and the bare presence of experience need not be one and the same function.

We can investigate how the brain supports body ownership, how memory sustains biographical continuity and how the sense of authorship can be mistaken without thereby solving what the subject of consciousness ultimately is.

This is why the Knowledge Tree needs a separate Identity and Self branch. This article only opens the door: consciousness ≠ a complete theory of the personal self.

Whenever later articles use the words mind, brain or consciousness, we can ask a short sequence of questions: Are we discussing anatomy and neural mechanism? A mental function? A behavioural outcome? The reported content of experience? The presence of experiencing itself? Or have we already made a metaphysical claim about what consciousness ultimately is?

This map avoids two opposite errors. The first is reduction by declaration: because a neural correlate has been found, the entire problem of consciousness is declared solved. The second is an argument from mystery: because consciousness is not fully explained, the large body of reliable evidence about its brain conditions and mental functions is ignored.

This article therefore ends not with the answer to 'what is consciousness?' but with a better map of the question.
